6.0 Functional Grammar and the making of meaning

The power of language cannot be underestimated. With careful selection of grammatical features and their placement in a specific context, the writer can create mood, tone and atmosphere, construct formality or informality, indicate control in a situation, establish a point of view, enable the reader to know and feel what is happening to characters in various situations, create dialogue and move the plot forward, and finally support a discourse.
