Performance Assessment
Depending on whether grades are being allocated to an individual or a group, the way that your contribution is assessed will vary.
When marks are being allocated to an Individual in a performance, what does a HIGH DISTINCTION student look like?
During the Rehearsal Process, an HD student:
- Attends every rehearsal on time
- Turns off the mobile phone
- Makes helpful contributions to discussions and brain-storming sessions.
- Is well-prepared. Eg:
- Read the play when required
- Learns lines on time
- Brings costume and props when required
- Always has required music/sound/video/etc
- Remembers blocking
- Researches topic thoroughly (in terms of the entire play as well as own character)
- Knows the meaning of the lines
- Experiments with form
- Shows development of scenes
- Explores a wide range of possible performance strategies before selecting the best for the scenes.
- Arranges to rehearse scenes outside of standard rehearsal schedule.
- Will arrange for follow-up rehearsals after sessions with the director.
- Works in an ensemble
- Helps others
- Is available to work lines with others
- Brings costumes/props/etc to contribute to the group
- Contributes skills to the group (eg if you are a dancer, you might choreograph some work for other actors or a musician may support another scene by playing music for them)
- Spends time teaching others.
- Watches others and gives advice. Spending time being an objective audience member will help others to improve.
- Voluntarily prepares physical/vocal warm-ups.
- Available to help bump in/bump out.
- Always leaves room tidy and puts equipment back in place.
- Is prepared to make mistakes and learn from them.
- Contributes to the whole production rather than just focussing on own performance.
- Spends a minimum of 10 hours per week working on the production.
In the Performance an HD student:
- Focuses exclusively on the performance.
- Knows the job that needs to happen and works hard to make it work.
- Presents a fluent performance that is so familiar that it is second nature.
- Responds appropriately to technical considerations (eg doesn’t walk out of the light, integrates music/sound with own performance, etc)
- Uses appropriate Performance techniques (eg doesn’t miss cues, uses appropriate volume and tone of voice, etc)
- Knows exactly where s/he is supposed to be on stage and what the effect of this might be (an understanding of proxemics and kinesics will help).
- Will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the text and the chosen performance style and is able to make connections between private research and the performance.
