Sophie McGrath

photo of Sr Sophie McGrathDr McGrath, located on the Strathfield campus, was the coordinator of the original project for the establishment of the Golding Centre. With a strong background in education she brought to the task a doctorate in history and a long standing interest in women’s history, which she had taught at the Catholic Theological Union. The latter with the Columban Mission Institute formed the Union Theological Institute, a member of the ecumenical Sydney College of Divinity. Dr McGrath’s doctoral thesis, a centenary history of the Sisters of Mercy, Parramatta, was published by the University of New South Wales press as These Women? She had researched and published in the areas of the Christian philosophy of education, the education of Catholic girls, women religious in the history of Australia and feminism and the papacy. On the establishment of the Golding Centre in 2003 she was appointed Director.

Rosa MacGinley

photo of Dr Rosa MacGinleyDr MacGinley, located on the Brisbane campus, had worked at the Theological Union, Hunters Hill as an historian with a strong background in Church , Australian and Irish histories and as a specialist in the history of women religious. She had been a founding member of the Institute of Religious Studies (IRS) established in 1980 on the initiative of Dr Carmel Leavy op. In association with IRS she had carried out a major research project on the history of women religious in Australia, which involved an in-depth knowledge of their international roots and the canonical development of their status in the Church. A seminal work it was subsequently published as A Dynamic Of Hope: Institutes of Women Religious In Australia. Dr MacGinley had published several commissioned monographs on specific religious congregations and numerous articles in this field.


Kim Power

Photo of Dr Kim PowerDr Power, located on the Melbourne campus with outreach to the Ballarat campus, came to the team with a strong background in Patristics (early Christian history, focusing mainly on the Fathers of the Church). She approached her research from the perspective of a feminist theologian. Her Masters thesis had focused on Augustine in relation to women and her doctoral thesis on Ambrose from a gender perspective. Her Master’s thesis was published as Veiled Desire: Augustine on women. She had been the Charles Strong lecturer in 1997 and Senior Fullbright Scholar in 1997-1980. After contributing significantly to the establishment of the Centre especially in pursuing the such issues as the spirituality of giving birth and motherhood, Dr Power retired in 2007 owing to ill-health, remaining a loyal Friend of the Centre.
