Golding Centre Colloquia 2015 – 13th Annual Colloquia

Venue: Mount Saint Mary Campus. Australian Catholic University, Barker St Strathfield. (Registration in Entrance Hall of Edmund Rice House, Colloquia in Function Room.)
Date: Saturday 18 April (second Saturday after Easter Sunday)

Time: Time: Registration from 9.30 a.m.; first colloquium 10.00 a.m.; third colloquium will finish by 3.30 p.m. Note: Morning and afternoon tea, and lunch provided.
Cost: $20 to cover expenses (pay on the day – cash only please).

Transport: : Ample parking available in ACU grounds, accessed from Barker St. Mount Saint Mary Campus is a 15 minute walk from Strathfield Railway Station, follow Albert St to the end where there is pedestrian access to the Campus. The Cost of a taxi is not exorbitant and they are easily available from the Railway Station

First Colloquium:
Catherine Bishop will share with us the fruits of her doctoral thesis (ANU): “Commerce was a Woman: Women in Business in Colonial Sydney and Wellington.” The commercial world, especially in the colonial era, is assumed to have been strictly the realm of men , usually connected with well-established or daringly entrepreneurial businesses located in the Home country. Catherine will broaden our horizons as she introduces us to the overlooked and undervalued but crucially important reality of women in business in two important colonies in the antipodes.

Second Colloquium:
Mary Ryllis Clark (author of Loreto in Australia) and Heather O’Connor (ACU doctoral thesis published as The Challenge of Change) will share with us the fruit of their experience in co-researching and editing Perfect Charity, Women Religious Living the Spirit of Vatican II. As a result of the original in-depth research these lay women had done individually on two significant women religious orders, they were fascinated by these women as they compared them with their own personal experience with wider feminist secular groups. Mary and Heather were drawn to extend their research across a range of women religious orders. The co-editors will share with us this rich experience to open up thought provoking conversation.

Third Colloquium:
Teresa (Tess)Flaherty will share with us the challenging world of missionary work which she explored in her doctoral thesis “The History of the Sisters of Mercy in Papua New Guinea (1956-2000): within the Tradition of Women called to Gospel Discipleship and Christian Mission”, successfully presented in 2014 (ACU). Doctoral student Cheryl Camp, who served in PNG during the time covered by Tess will lead the following conversation.
