Explanations

  1. c. The purpose of this text type is to explain how and why phenomena occur in scientific and technical fields. It is concerned with why acid rain occurs, the causes of this phenomenon.

  1. d. These are general nouns.
  2. b. These are technical terms such as are commonly found in texts which explain technological and natural phenomena scientifically.
  3. b. Uncontaminated and acidic are factual adjectives. As well as being factual and not emotive or opinion adjectives, fossil and exhaust are classifying adjectives.
  4. d. These are action verbs, expressing the events taking place.
  5. c. Then is a time connective showing the sequence of events.
  6. d. Because is a causal conjunction and is caused, result and be affected are verbs which show the cause and effect relationship between the events.
  7. a. These verbs are in the passive. This allows the phenomenon undergoing the process to be focus of the sentence.
  8. c. These are nominalisations to name the abstract phenomenon.
  9. d. Value is an abstract noun, expressing an idea and not a concrete object.
