Explanations

I.

  1. (a) would be the answer for an information report.
    (c) would be the answer for an explanation and things work.

II.

  1. a This introduces an information report
    b. This introduces an explanation
  2. b. This usually occurs in a recount
    c. The complication has to have some kind of problem. In this longer story there are two series of events before the actual complication.
  3. a This is the second series of events before the actual complication
    b. This occurs in an explanation text, not in a narrative
  4. a. This is the complication
  5. This paragraph has not only the resolution of the complication, "We'll give Tweet the best funeral a canary ever had.", but it also has the main character changing and learning from her experience. This is the coda.

III.

  1. Adjectivals add more information about nouns, not verbs. These words are referring to the verb.
  2. 'told', 'said' and 'replied' are saying verbs
  3. The participants in a story are specific people and animals and the like - in this case Sally and Tweet. These are also proper nouns because they are their names
  4. 'then', 'at this point' and 'just then' are connectives. They show the relationship/ time sequence among the events in the story
  5. The nouns in these groups are made vivid by the presence of adjectives adding certain qualities
