2.2 Quality Academic Writing Style

Quality writing style is evident where the reader can readily follow the writer’s argument through his/her use of method, logic and clarity of expression. One of the real tests for quality Academic Writing Style lies in the writer’s achievement of focus, particularly found in the regular use of topic sentences in each paragraph. If the writer has clearly defined the subject, problems about clarity, unity and repetition and consistency rarely occur. The writer must also realize that focus in writing does not just occur simply because he/she has researched the topic and organized it into topic areas. Writing is a thoughtful process in which the writer’s consistent use within paragraphs of argumentation following hard upon explanation and the use of documented evidence is essential. These three features are the result of the writer’s planned approach to the topic through a process of critical thinking, research and the formulation of argument.

Lastly, the focus is supported by the writer’s careful selection and combination of words, phrases and sentences through the use of cohesive devices within and between paragraphs. Needless to say, correct spelling and punctuation and accurate English Expression play an important role in the communication process.
